Beautiful property but not good planning on where they put the smoking areas

This is a beautiful property, however their placement of the smoking areas was not well thought out. With so few places to smoke on the property, it makes it difficult for smokers and non smokers. I am a respectful smoker and the placement of their smoking areas is where all non smokers have to walk through to get to the restaurant or activity pools

Coronovirus fear

We just returned . The resort itself was beautiful. Our waiter at the pool and all the servers in the restaurant were SO personable. They made you feel like you were the only customer. It was also a stressful time because the coronovirus statistics were growing daily. I reported a lady to guest services that was getting in and out of the pool coughing and sneezing and told her husband her fever would not come down. It made all of us uncomfortable. I asked them to santitize the pool railings that she was using, I sat there for 2 hours. They never came to check on her nor did they sanitize the pool railings. They also did not implement social distancing in the restaurants and continued to have the buffets, they should have someone with a mask serving the items so every guest didn't touch the same spoon over and over. This disease is new to all of us But I didn't see any changes but a bottle of hand sanitizer on the server stations. Overall I would have had a better experience if the virus wasn't happening but I will give it another try in the future.

Great beach and pool, disappointing rooms.

The grounds are beautifully maintained and beach is excellent. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms were a disappointment - small and stuffy. Food was nothing special but no worse than any other all-inclusive for this price. There are two restaurants - Andrea has the better food and atmosphere but doesn't enjoy the same ocean view as La Ribera. Both offer a buffet as well as a la carte options, which were generally better

Nice place but needs to keep up with the times

We have been members and stayed at velas many times since 2013. It’s location to airport is really great. Our check in process was easy even though our room was not ready until 5. We have a 2 bedroom room. The room for kids has way more storage in bedroom and bathroom than the master. Which is confusing. The food has been the same since our first visit- we don’t usually eat dinner here since it just gets old. The facilities and common areas could use an update but will say the big screen in lobby is a nice touch but only on sometimes. I don’t love the towel process of towel cards- having to return our towels at end of day seems like it could be done by the resort - like many others at this level. I wish there was a bar where you could sit and have a drink before dinner with common area for relaxing. Unless your at pool swim up bar or restaurant there is not really any place. I also was asked multiple times per day while sitting at edge of pool area- to buy trinkets from beach vendors. Would be nice to have area where they can be but not able to come up to pool area- maybe rope off spot to keep them more on beach. Overall- our stay was fine-the resort just feels tired. The employees also feel a little tired- maybe not as happy to go the extra mile or not as genuinely friendly. There is lots of competition out there and other resorts off more with more upgraded amenities
